Question re installing granite countertop on island?

we have a sturdy piece of antique furn on casters in which the top has a slight overhang.I want to use this as an island.I notice 2 pieces of wood on the top.well built as it is very old.Rather than dispose of it I want to purchase a granite remnant from a local store and put it on the piece to make a nice island with 2 stools.Is it that difficult to install.Can they just cut the granite and we put in on.What do u suggest.It will make a wonderful island in my country kitchen.Does it just lay on top or do we have to glue it Thanks in advance for all your answers

Sounds cool, so definitely go for it. Just a heads up, unless you've already found the granite piece you want, you might also want to look into granite tile rather than an entire slab. It'll be cheaper, and easier to install (don't have to lift a big slab).

Islands work the same as counter tops, except you don't have to cut out slots for sinks and cut miter joints for corners. Even though you could just theoretically lay down the granite on top and be done, you should definitely glue it down so if a dog jumps up on the island of you lay a heavy pot down, it won't topple over.

Alternately, since I'm not entirely sure what's the architecture of the base, you could also use big screws to hold down the granite. It's unconventional (everyone uses glue, don't want anything poking from the granite), but the protruding bolts from the surface of the granite might match the antique base and give you a nice architectural piece for your kitchen. That's what so cool about making your own furniture - there's so many cool things you can do to make it truly custom.

Once again, if you haven't found the exact granite slab to use, you might want to look into other materials as well. Concrete is increasingly becoming a popular surface top, and can be stained many colors and polished to where it looks nearly the same as granite. It'll still be cheaper than granite (I know kitchen renovations are never cheap). Good luck with the project!
