Portland area houses usually do not have granite counter tops in the kitchen as recently as 10 years. I have witnessed first hand a number of changes in the design of the kitchen the last 20-25 years has included several topics of wide acceptance. Portland was the first homes Tile countertops. Some had wooden counters. With introduction of high pressure plastic laminate, which saw the removal of wood, tile, and even some vinyl roofs against age. Because of its versatility and reasonable cost, laminated plastic, better known by the brand name "Formica", performed most of the market share for many years.

As Formica became too common, as is always the case, the world wanted to design something new and different again. reintroduced tile countertops as the latest innovation for the kitchen, both new and remodeled. Tiles into account for the vast majority of home installations upgraded and newer homes new endpoint for several years, even as Formica continued to be used in entry-level homes and apartments. Of course tile countertops also began once again seen as "old" and something new and different is needed again to meet the changing desires of the designers and owners alike.

Another new innovation came to the scene and became touted as "the" need to update kitchen top. This product, properly named solid surface, but better known as Corian, held the attention of the industry for several years. Believe it or not, I remember seeing at least one job where Corian Formica face was covered in a remodeling situation in which you want a color change!

The granite was used extensively during this time as well as an update of the standard tile or Formica counters. It's basically a 12 inch square 3 / 8 inch thick instead of in the shape of the current table being used. These "tiles" of granite countertops were somewhere between the top Corian, and tile at the lower end of the price spectrum now.

Once again began to be a clamor for something new and different. granite slabs had been used in homes more expensive, but not much of what was seen. As the technology tools developed to accelerate the processing of stone, granite slabs became the new major player in the countertop industry. First, of course, was seen in the high-end homes and renovations, and most of us do not even know of its existence in the counter form. As the jet housing developed, builders to create their homes, apart from its competitors, and granite countertops began to be in the mid-range homes. This in turn affect the population to the idea, and the remodeling sector also had to have granite.

Even now, we are seeing movement of granite in the kitchens of the apartments and that some apartment owners perceive the value in its timeless aesthetic and economic. Other materials first sale made their way into the market as well, concrete, glass, stainless steel, quartz, stone and paper, among them. We are even looking at wooden desks be re-presented as something new.

While the Portland market could not have had a lot of stone counter tops in its infancy, and "Thin Stone" is perhaps a relatively recent innovation, there can be no doubt that the stone, both granite and otherwise, is one of the oldest building materials known to man. Whatever below to use the counter, it is indisputable that when the circle of development comes back together, granite, or perhaps some other form of stone, need to be the last counter best choice for your kitchen.
